Newborn baby sleeping peacefully in mother's lap — gentle parenting moment

Let me paint you a picture.

It's the middle of the night. Your baby has finally — finally — fallen asleep. You tiptoe out of the room, barely breathing, and then it happens. A car drives past outside. The heating clicks on. Your partner sneezes in the next room.

And just like that, your baby is awake again.

Sound familiar? Then white noise might just change your life.

What exactly is white noise?

White noise is a consistent, steady sound that masks other noises around it. Think of the hum of a hoover, the whoosh of a hair dryer, or the gentle static of an untuned radio. It's not silence — it's actually the opposite. It's a constant, soothing blanket of sound that drowns out the unpredictable bumps and bangs of everyday life.

And for babies? It can be absolute magic.

Why do babies love it?

Here's something that blew my mind when I first learned it: the womb is loud.

Not quiet and peaceful as we might imagine — actually surprisingly noisy. The sound of a mother's heartbeat, her digestive system, the rush of blood through the placenta — it all creates a constant background hum that babies spend nine months listening to. So when they arrive in our comparatively quiet world, silence can actually feel unsettling to them.

White noise recreates something familiar. Something that says: you are safe, you are held, everything is okay.

No wonder it works so well.

How to use white noise — and what worked for us

The good news is that you don't need any special equipment to get started. In our house, the humble hoover was an absolute game changer in those early weeks. Not running it constantly, of course — but the sound of it was enough to calm my daughter almost instantly. There were nights when nothing else worked, and that familiar rumble saved us completely.

And here's the thing: you don't even need to drag out the actual hoover anymore. Hoover sounds, rain, static, ocean waves — you can find all of them on Spotify or through a free white noise app on your phone. Just search "white noise for babies" or "hoover sounds for sleeping" and you'll find hours of options, completely free. A phone on the bedside table is all you need.

A few options to try:
  • Hoover or vacuum sounds — our personal favourite

  • Gentle rain or running water

  • Ocean waves or a babbling brook

  • Classic white noise static

  • Fan or air conditioning hum

Finding what works for your baby

Not all white noise is created equal — at least not in your baby's opinion.

My daughter was firmly in the hoover camp for the first few weeks. It worked brilliantly — until one day it simply didn't anymore. Babies change, and what works beautifully one week may stop working the next. When that happened for us, we moved on to other techniques — and found new things that helped just as much.

So if one sound stops working, don't panic. Just try something new. The right combination is out there.

A word on dependency — and keeping it healthy

I want to address something that I know crosses the mind of every new parent: what if my baby becomes too dependent on white noise to sleep?

It's a valid concern, and one worth thinking about.

My honest advice: use white noise as a tool, not a crutch. It's wonderful for those early weeks and months when everything is new and overwhelming — for baby and parent alike. But try not to make it the only thing that helps your little one settle. Rotate between different techniques, gradually reduce it as your baby gets older, and trust that most children naturally grow out of needing it as their sleep matures.

The goal is always a baby who can eventually self-settle — white noise can be a gentle stepping stone on that journey, not a permanent fixture.

Want more calming techniques?

White noise is just one of six tried-and-tested techniques included in my debut picture book, Hush Little Baby, Go to Sleep — alongside thirty gentle bedtime stories featuring the most adorable woodland animals you'll ever meet.

Because the best bedtime book should leave every reader — big and small — feeling a little more peaceful than before they opened it.
